What is Prokera?

Prokera is a way to treat the surface of the eye when it has been affected by an ocular surface disease. If you have painful eyes caused by a surface eye disease, contact our eye doctors at Wichita Optometry in Wichita to schedule an eye exam.

The Amniotic Membrane

Prokera is a device that is made out of an amniotic membrane. These membranes are a part of the placenta that grows alongside a baby in the womb. This membrane provides protection to the baby and also helps it to develop. The biological processes that the membrane uses can help with the repair of the surface of the eye. Those biological actions make the membrane perfect for naturally treating the eyes. The tissue comes from mothers who have undergone Cesarean sections and is provided by a tissue bank that is FDA-regulated. Both the tissue and the donor who donates it have to pass several health tests before the procedure.

Healing the Eye's Surface

Prokera is worn on the eye in a way that is similar to wearing contact lenses, but they are larger. When they are worn, they can quickly provide relief for symptoms and reduce the inflammation that comes with an eye-surface disease. It can help to heal your cornea and get your eyes back to a normal state. When our patients use Prokera, they receive less inflammation and scarring from the eye disease. The tissues are clear and very thin, and Prokera isn't painful to wear. It keeps the damaged eye tissue protected while it is in. It is generally worn for between three and five days, depending on the issue with the eye.
